Hyperion Warheads are
highly destructive torpedoes that work on a substantially
different concept than other projectile weapons currently employed
by the United Federation of Planets. The details of their
operation are kept undisclosed even to the majority of a
starship's crew. With the exception of the senior staff and chief
tactical officer, how hyperion warheads operate to such extreme
destructive capacities remains a carefully kept secret.
For those privy to
such classified information, the hyperion warhead stands out as a
breakthrough in StarFleet weapon's research, combining lessons
learned from the zero point energy
quantum torpedo as well as quantum physics to create a weapon
significantly different than any previously employed in the Alpha
Quadrant.
Whereas the focus of previous torpedo designs had been on creating
more energetic and destructive explosions in order to overpower
deflector
shields or tear through hull armor; hyperion warheads do
something else entirely.
| Like the
quantum torpedo, hyperion warheads implement a zero point
energy tap initiated by a secondary matter/anti-matter total
conversion reaction. But instead of channeling the ensuing
burst of energy into an explosion, the warhead rapidly
disperses it into the local matter matrix of a target,
exciting the resident electrons to their highest energy
states. This process takes several seconds, in which time
there is no immediate visible effect of the weapon aside
surface damage caused by the kinetic energy of the warhead
collision. But once their highest energy level is achieved,
the electrons of the local matter tear free from their atomic
nuclei, instantaneously converting solid matter into plasma in
a violent explosion of light and energy.
This process has the advantage
of utilizing the atomic structure of a ship's armor in causing
it's own destruction, and guarantees a low variance in effect
against different targets. The only major drawback of hyperion
warheads is that they are relatively ineffective against
shields, since they are composed of gravitic, subspace or
other energy fields and not periodic matter. As such these
weapons primarily come into play only after the
shields of an enemy vessel have been knocked down. |

Despite this
limitation, hyperion warheads, when used against unshielded
targets produce damages in the extreme, usually accompanied by
gargantuan blue explosions which leave many ships shattered in
pieces or even vaporized altogether. The color of the explosions
is a direct side effect of the heat energy released, in
temperatures in excess of 25,000 degrees Kelvin.
Although the design
has an increased destructive capacity and a more efficient design
than either
quantum or
photon torpedoes, hyperion warheads are much harder to
manufacture. It has been this difficulty of mass-production
coupled with political concerns over mounting potential weapons of
mass destruction aboard Federation starships which has resulted in
a typical hyperion-armed starship load-out usually not exceeding
twenty warheads. |
