PHYSICS: BASIC PHYSICS: RADIATION: RADIO WAVES

Physics Brief:
Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation that can radiate through the oxygen-nitrogen environment of Class M worlds without being significantly absorbed by the atmosphere. Radio waves are commonly divided into 8 different categories by their electromagnetic frequency:

Very Low Frequency VLF:

3-30 kHz 3-30 (103 hertz)
Low Frequency LF:  30-300 kHz 30-300 (103 hertz)
Medium Frequency MF: 300-3000 kHz 300-3000 (103 hertz)
High Frequency HF:  3-30 MHz 3-30 (106 hertz)
Very High Frequency VHF:  30-300 MHz 30-300 (106 hertz)
Ultra High Frequency UHF:  300-3000 MHz 300-3000 (106 hertz)
Super High Frequency SHF:  3-30 GHz 3-30 (109 hertz)
Extremely High Frequency EHF:  30-300 GHz 30-300 (109 hertz)

Above 300 GHz, the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by a Class M planet's atmosphere is so great that it is effectively opaque to higher frequencies, excluding the infrared and visible light frequency ranges.

Radio waves are commonly produced by artificial technologies associated with intelligent civilizations native to Class M worlds. They can be easily shielded against and present little danger to organic tissue.
