A neutron is a
baryon
matter particle composed of one upsilon
quark, two
delta quarks
and a lepton.
It has a net charge of 0, and a mass of 1.6750x10-24
grams (close to that of a
proton).
Most often it is found in the nucleus of atoms of all periodic
matter, but can also exist in large quantities in neutron stars in
a form called
neutronium. In free space, neutrons (free neutrons are called
neutron
radiation) have a half-life of about fifteen minutes and decay
by emitting an
electron
and an antineutrino to become a
proton;
this is known as
beta decay. The neutron is the
antiparticle of an
antineutron. |
