Designed as a temporary emergency backup in the event a ship's doctor is disabled, the Emergency Medical Hologram is a holographic program with state of the art medical databanks. Though theoretically an EMH could serve as ship's doctor on extended missions without human aid, human doctors are preferred. The EMH is capable of learning and growing outside its programming, but this requires extensive time active in the absence of medical emergencies.
