Cloning is the process of making an exact genetic duplicate of an individual. Closely related to genetic engineering, cloning has been used in both galaxies, with differing results. In the Alpha Quadrant, cloning is rare, used only in isolated communities that do not have the genetic diversity needed to support a population any other way. Because of the Eugenics Wars, a series of devastating conflicts that ravaged Earth in the mid 21st century, stringent anti-cloning and anti-genetic modification laws exist in the Federation.

While cloning is also uncommon in the Empire, the famed genetic engineers of Kamino were quite adept at the process--producing the Clone Troopers whom after the "Clone Wars" are named.
