COMPUTERS: TACTICAL NETWORKS: COM-SCAN/TACTICAL INTEGRATION SYSTEM

Technical Brief:

The first Imperial skirmish with the United Federation of Planets in the Lesser Ploroid Sector proved to be quite educational for engineers of the Galactic Empire. Although Admiral Raschuu's overzealous approach nearly ignited an untimely war and cost the lives of nearly 50,000 loyal Imperial officers in the process, it revealed to the technicians of the Galactic Empire several valuable tactical facts about the Federation's starfleet. One of the most important being that Imperial ship and weapons tracking technology would be vastly outclassed by the speed and maneuverability demonstrated by Federation starships in a war. For a long time, analysis droids and living minds alike poured over the data from the short battle and found themselves straining to believe that such small alien cruisers could so easily achieve speeds in appreciable amounts of the speed of light.

Scientists put forward theory after theory to try and explain the uncanny ability of these ships to accelerate to an apparent upper limit of .25c with little problem. Some of them suggested that immensely compacted hypermatter reactors powered these tiny vessels, a prospect that was deeply disturbing to Imperial tacticians. A high-level investigation into StarFleet propulsion technology was likewise launched, and soon the Empire, through the help of the Ferengi Alliance, was introduced to the miracles of impulse drive.

The technology was soon dissected, analyzed, and understood, leading Imperial technicians to begin work on the next generation of Com-Scan and fire control systems, designed specifically to increase the ability of Imperial warships to track and target vessels moving at near-relativistic speeds. Before this, accurate fire control acquisition and tracking at such velocities was practically impossible.

The Com-Scan/Tactical Integration System (CSTIS), or Advanced Battle Analysis Network, was the result of these endeavors. It allowed for real-time hyperwave data links between equipped Imperial vessels; ranging from snub fighters to the majestic Star Destroyers and Command Ships. The sharing of tactical and sensor information over this network allowed for the fluid transfer of critical data between all Imperial ships in a battle group. Not only did this increase accuracy, but the links provided the necessary reaction speed with which Imperial gunners could more reliably track and target fast-moving Federation cruisers.

For additional discussion of the topic of the CSTIS network, please refer to the CSTIS thread in the What Is...? Forum.
