Polarized Hull Plating
From TFC Galactopedia
Polarized hull plating was a defensive technology that preceded shields. In a battle situation, electromagnetic power could be applied to the hull materials, making them several orders of magnitude harder. This technology was developed by Terrans for use on ships of the Earth Starfleet such as the Phoenix Seven in the 22nd Century. Hull polarization technology as a means of armor hardening was eventually abandoned in favor of structural integrity fields.
Polarizing a hull on a 24th century starship can be used as a method of masking it's approach.
