Background:

Lanna, an only child, spent her childhood on the Klingon homeworld, Earth and various places in between. Since she moved so often she became a very independent and resourceful, finding her own ways to entertain herself. The reason for her constant moving was her parents' occupation as merchants and traders in her father's family company. When she was very young, her father often brought her new and exciting 'toys'; pieces of unique and interesting alien technology. Lanna's mother, also an engineer, fostered her daughter's creative skills by allowing her to assist in some on-board repairs and optimizations and encouraging her to explore her ideas in simulations and small-scale mockups. While her parents' marriage was at first faced with skepticism from both sides, by the time Lanna was born the two families had discovered the arrangement was mutually beneficial in terms of commerce and that the respective in-laws weren't all that bad. Key to this was the inevitable cultural exchange of drinking songs and spirits. Specifically her grandfathers bonding over bloodwine, whiskey, haggis and gagh at a Kirkpatrick family reunion. The two of them, both three sheets to the wind and in kilts, is now a regular occurence at the gathering once every 5 years.

Lanna's warrior spirit led her to briefly serve on one of the warships her mother's house controlled. While serving with her rowdy cousins was enjoyable (even if they gave her a hard time for being shorter than everyone else), she was dissatisfied with their technology and the way things were run. This lead to her taking over Engineering from her older cousin who was more than happy to let her move in since it allowed him to persue piloting - something he was much better at. Eventually her Grandfather and Uncle kicked her off the ship and sent her packing for Starfleet. While her tuning and tweaking made her ship run better than it ever had before, she was running the engineering crew absolutely ragged. The final straw was when she made her (20 years older and 2 feet taller) second cousin break down into tears for forgetting to properly clean a plasma manifold. While the Federation and the Klingon Empire weren't at war, the older Klingons thought it would be a grand idea to send this ball of intense energy right into the heart of Starfleet. Either the outcome would be hillarious or she'd whip them into shape and drag the whole lot of them kicking and screaming into a more Klingon mindset, both options they regarded as being beneficial. Though they would never admit it, Starfleet had better technology in a lot of ways than the Empire and was a place much more suited to Lanna's technical interests.

Lanna graduated at the top of her class and Starfleet Research & Development was very disappointed when she chose to serve on a starship when she graduated, rather than continue working directly with them. Most of her projects from this time with R&D are still considered strictly top-secret. She continues to send ideas to and is an abroad consultant for that department. A fair chunk of Lanna's record is classified as her early years as an officer in Starfleet were spent with Starfleet Intelligence on highly classified projects. Her assignment on the FELIX is a direct result of her most recent classified work on the USS PEGASUS-B. While Lanna may be occasionally dissastisfied with Starfleet's seeming lack of action, she prefers to work within the system to the best of her ability; a trait which made her a candidate for SI in the first place and a reason she is not with Section 31. Having seen Section 31's work first hand in a delicate joint operation, she has declined to join their ranks despite their attempts at recruiting her. She finds their actions to be dishonorable and even heavy-handed despite their subtlety.

Following her involvement in the altercation between the United Federation of Planets and the Galactic Empire, particularly her role in ending that dispute, Lanna was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander and became the sole chief engineer of the FELIX with the promotion of Khajja VonKlatt to another vessel. Lanna has fostered friendships with both Zannah Lyles and her apprentice, Perdia and has learned more about the Sith and the Far Galaxy from both. She frequently includes them in her away teams as civilian security experts.

Previous assignments include: the USS FALCON, the USS NIMITZ-D, the USS SPIRIT, the USS MANTICORE and the USS PEGASUS-B.

Physical Description:

Lanna is half Siberian tiger (Klingon) and half domestic cat (Terran). Her ears are halfway between a tiger's rounded ones and a domestic cat's pointed ones and her face is likewise structured somewhere in between. Her tail is fluffy by tiger standards and has the movement of a domestic cat's. Hybrid Vigor has resulted in Lanna having a superior immune system by even Klingon standards and great recuperative ability and stamina. However she also expresses a number of recessive traits from both sides of her parentage. The most obvious is her height. At 5'2" (1.57 m) Lanna is short for even Terran standards. Second most obvious is her coloring.

Her fur is white with simplified, black tiger markings. The black and white stripes are recessive traits in her mother's family that hybridization allowed to be expressed albiet in a very basic manner. She has gull wing Vs on her forehead which follow her ridges. Her ears are white with black diamond/stripes on them approx. where the white spots are on a tiger's ears. Lanna's hair is medium brown and has some reddish highlights as well as some black strands which are fairly common in her father's largely calico family. Her hair is very wavy following after her mother's Klingon heritage. She cuts it just below her shoulders claiming it becomes more trouble than it's worth if it is left to grow longer. Lanna's eyes are Sepia brown. She has had her fur permanently dyed black (ie furry tattoo) somewhere on her body. The exact location and shape of her tattoo is the subject of speculation on the FELIX. The medical staff who know refuse to tell partially because of professional integrity and partially out of fear.

The black diamond marks over her eyes are actually from her father's family where patches of color over one or both of the eyes is a genetic oddity that has proven to be a dairly dominant trait. Tradition holds that in the very, very distant past their clan would paint these marks blue before going into battle. While the historical validity of this is highly questionable, the face painting is an enduring tradition at the family reunion highland games. In Lanna this feature expressed itself as a stripe over each eye.

Character Notes:

Lanna is a brilliant engineer, but is a workaholic, preferring to stay in main engineering overtime or work on some of her personal designs rather than participate in any social events. Lanna had few close friends as a child and as a result she lacks certain people skills and is rather impatient and often blunt. Her youth travelling around the galaxy has given her the knowledge of how to deal with a variety of people and cultures but she prefers the more direct Klingon style "diplomacy". She is accomplished in the areas of general ship and engine design, warp theory, the burgeoning federation study of transwarp, and has dabbled in AI construction. She loves to design, fiddle with, create and generally explore new technology.

Lanna does not see her mixed heritage as a weakness; she sees Terrans as tending to being too placid and Klingons as tending to be too violent. Naturally as something in between she sees herself as having a more balanced outlook (though either side might disagree). Her well-adjusted attitude is a direct result of a decided lack of angst in her younger days caused by her parents' differences. When her father married a Klingon it was the to surprise of absolutely no one; his friends referred to him as "that crazy Scot" who enjoyed a challenge. Lanna became a favorite of her maternal grandfather L'Noth for a number of reasons: She is the only granddaughter, from an early age she showed a lot of 'moxie' (a Terran word he liked) and because she was also short like he is (though that is still taller than Lanna). That she was also named for him didn't hurt either; 'Lanna' is the feminized version of 'L'Noth'. L'Noth taught her the Klingon Martial arts and the bat'leth while she lived on Quo'nos.

While not the biggest house, the House of L'Noth is well respected and is an older, noble house in the Empire. It is also noted for being somewhat eccentric, though the other houses never say this outright since very few of them can claim an unbroken line directly from Kahless. The founder is said to have been a black and whte tiger who was low-born and ridiculed for his pelt, but through his own honorable actions, prowess in battle and wise judgements he won the accord of the great Kahless himself and the hand of his granddaughter. Since then the black and white coloration has been considered good-luck and a mark of someone destined to bring the house great honor. Naturally this earned her father brownie-points with his wife's extended family and no doubt made Lanna's life a little easier as well. She isn't the only one in her generation to have it though, her older cousin Dartak (who is tertiary heir to the house) is also black and white. They are the first to have this coloration in four generations. The elders of her house claim that two in a generation after so long portends great things will happen in their lifetimes. Lanna thinks it's simple statistics and the family was just due to have cubs with recessive coloration.

Lanna is obsessive about 'her' engines and is a holy terror when they are broken or not up to par. She sees it as part of her duty to blast some of the shiny, wide-eyed naivety off Academy-fresh ensigns.

Lanna's tail has a tendency to swish when she's thinking hard, when she's teasing or being sarcastic. Lanna was one of the main proponents of Federation research of transwarp technology in the academy and after. Lanna is an accomplished bat'leth fighter and owns a number of the weapons both modern and antique. The blade on the wall in her quarters is a fairly modern one she wouldnt mind being blown up in an unfortunate accident onboard. Her antique blades are in the care of her maternal grandparents as she feels they are too valuable to bring with her while she travels the galaxy.

If you call her "Scotty", you will end up in sickbay. Yes, she can imitate her father's accent. Asking her to "do the voice" will probably land you in sickbay unless the person asking is one of her Klingon cousins. In the latter case a trip to sickbay will still probably be the result, but the cause will almost certainly be shattered kneecaps. Lanna isn't allowed to do the caber toss at reunions. It's best not to ask. She learned Sword dancing from one of her aunts alongside her terran cousins but claims not to have done it in years.
