Background:
Laddire O'Donnel grew up surrounded by Starfleet ships, however, surprisingly enough, his parents were not active duty Starfleet. They were civilian contractors that worked with Starfleet Corps of Engineers closely on the design and construction of starships. Laddire it seemed by fate became fascinated with starship engines and construction. When choosing his schooling emphasis he chose engineering sciences, and when he graduated, he decided to pursue in engineering. However, unlike his parents, who had attended MIT and the Cambridge Technology School, Laddire chose to take the entrance exams to Starfleet Academy School of Engineering and was accepted.
Laddire's experience at the Academy was really a 'mixed bag' affair. While extremely competent in his field, and well liked by many, because of his area of origin, chosen field of studies, and thick Scottish accent (it was often joked that he needed a universal translator just to be understood) he was constantly compared, and placed into the shadow of the great engineering miracle worker, Captain Montgomery Scott. However, Laddire refused to let this deter him. Instead of trying to match the image of the legendary engineer, he chose to excell in areas that Scott had not been known for, again, starship construction being the primary focus. Also at the Academy he met, courted and married a fellow cadet from the Medical Sciences school named Willow Davese.
Laddire graduated with honors and began his career in Starfleet aboard Earth Yards McKinley, doing much the same work as his parents. He however began to alternate between yard assignments and shipboard assignments to prove his 'space legs.' During one of his tours at Earth Yards McKinley, Laddire earned a doctorate in advanced starship design and theory.
The crowning moment of his career was to be assigned to the Galaxy Project. Laddire helped design the structure and propulsion systems for the new class, and as a reward, was given the slot of Chief Engineer aboard the very first ship of the class, the USS Galaxy herself. Laddire has been the chief ever since and has no plans on giving up the Galaxy's engine room to anyone else. He and Captain McLoude have an excellent professional relationship and personal friendship, the two respect and rely on each others expertise.

Character Notes:
While Laddire has passed his command qualifications in order to serve as a watch officer, and is the Galaxy's second officer, he has no desire for command other than that of the engine room itself.
Laddire sees himself as a teacher of not only young Academy graduates, but also engineering hopefuls as well. He has helped Headmistress McLoude develop an engineering skills test program for students readying to take their entrance exams into the Academy, as well as practical lessons he's helped design in his off hours.
Laddire is well thought of within the Corps of Engineers, and in fact, in recent years he has collected a small 'crisis team' patterned after those used by the Corps on much smaller ships to help with situations most generalist engineers might not be equipped for. The Galaxy is the only ship of her class with such a team aboard.
Laddire's one constant aggravation is that everyone wants to compare him to Captain Scott. His contention is that he is not the same type of engineer Scott was. Scott after all he says with a smile at times, never designed ships from scratch. Still, there are those that always wish to compare the collie to the famous engineer, though he has learned to swallow his pride at such times.
