Jedi Purges

From TFC Galactopedia

The Jedi Purges were one of the most memorable events involved in The Emperor’s rise to power. The purges were believed to have begun with the destruction of the Jedi Temple in 1786 J.A.

The Jedi Purges were marked by the killing of many Jedi Knights and Masters and the destruction or reclamation of many Jedi relics, including holocrons and lightsabers.

The Jedi Resistance

While The Emperor was revealing his new Empire to the Galactic Senate, the Sith following he had built during his rule as Supreme Chancellor was beginning an assault on the Jedi Temple. The new Emperor justified his invasion on the peaceful Jedi by presenting falsified evidence showing that the Jedi had planned to assassinate himself and the entire membership of the Galactic Senate so that they alone could rule the Republic.

Many of the Jedi within the temple were slaughtered, including the elderly and Jedi Younglings. The massacre was not complete, however, and a number of Jedi were able to escape the destruction to contact offworld Jedi and warn them not to return to Coruscant. Some of the Jedi who had survived the initial slaughter found safety on the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk, where they began reassembling the Jedi Order and planning an assault against the Reformed Sith Order.

The actions taken by the Jedi on Kashyyyk reinforced The Emperor claims that the Jedi sought to murder the Galactic Senate’s members, and allowed him to add accusations of attempted genocide against the Sith. The Galactic Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of putting down the Jedi Rebellion on Kashyyyk, clearing the way for a Jedi hunt that would continue for more than fifteen years.

Clone troopers and specially-trained Jedi Hunters were hastily dispatched to Kashyyyk to ‘subdue’ the Jedi Resistance. Many Jedi were killed outright, while other members of the Jedi Order were captured and turned to the Dark Side. The native Wookiees of Kashyyyk were turned into slave labor for the construction of Imperial vessels as punishment for their role in the initial Jedi resistance movement.

After Kashyyyk, Jedi Hunters and other minions of the Reformed Sith Order were dispatched throughout the Empire to ensure that all of the Jedi would eventually be tracked down. In extreme cases stronger Sith would be called in to dispatch of particularly worrisome targets, but a number of Jedi were able to survive the purges by going to ground in the farthest reaches of the galaxy.
