In an effort to squeeze even more speed out of the massive isolinear banks that comprise computer cores such as that of the Enterprise-D, Starfleet has encased these cores in a symmetrical subspace field. This enables the cores to conduct operations at speeds exceeding the speed of light, and can increase operation speed by 300%-500%, depending on the processing model.
