Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH)

The Emergency Medical Hologram was designed as a temporary emergency backup program in the event a starship's doctor is disabled or unavailable. The system is equipped with state of the art medical databanks, making it capable of a range of medical procedures in far excess of the expertise of a biological doctor.

Though theoretically an EMH could serve as ship's doctor on extended missions without human aid, human doctors are preferred, because the program becomes unstable after longtime use.
