Background: Chalice Rivval was born at her maternal grandparents' estate on Anaxes during a family visit. Though she was a frequent visitor to Anaxes during her childhood, most of her early life was spent in Temiris - the royal seat on her homeworld of Derias - and on Corsucant due to her father's position as the governing Imperial Moff of their planet. Chalice began learning self-defense tactics at the age of six due to her father's rank and his increasing sense of paranoia, including the use of a blaster and/or screaming shrilly at the top of her lungs (she's very good at that one). She and her two older siblings, Varen and Sira, were also pulled out of their schools in favor of carefully investigated personal tutors whose loyalty to the Rivval family and their safety was more easily assured.
The saga began with a visit to Jeren Rivval by his brother, who was a courtier of the royal family. Jeren's brother brought word that the king of Derias had three young nephews who might have been in the Jedi Temple at the time the Sith attacked it, and brought orders for Jeren to put his own neck on the line in search for three royal-blooded, Force-wielding heretics. Jeren, who was raised like most of the Derisian populace to hate Force users with a vengeance - and who was a gigantic coward - reported the information to the Imperial authorities upon his return to the Senate. Acting on Jeren's information, Imperial forces arrested the entire royal family as well as Jeren's brother and all other suspected participants, installing an Imperial garrison in Temiris to warn against any others on the planet who were nursing similar sympathies. In a move to reward the junior senator for his unwavering loyalty - and to ensure that he didn't reconsider it - Jeren Rivval was made into the new Imperial Moff over the planet of Derias and installed with the commanding officers of the garrison in the royal palace.
Propelled into an arena of extreme social prominence, the new moff and his wife set to work grooming their children for their future roles in Imperial society. Chalice's older sister and brother quickly became their parents' favorites as the moff and his wife recognized their own traits and personalities within their children, leaving Chalice to occupy and amuse herself largely through the royal library and an extensive collection of stuffed toys. Due to a growing sense of malice amongst the higher social castes toward the moff for betraying his former king, Chalice and her older sister were sent to the heavily protected Temiris Ladies' Seminary, a finishing school, when she was 17 years old; some of their classmates were abruptly removed by their parents in a sign of quiet opposition to the Imperial occupation.
In the two years she spent at the Ladies Seminary, Chalice made very poor grades in the classes she took, which ran in the ballroom dancing and polite conversation-making vein. This was largely due to the fact that Chalice's preferences toward work ran toward the "stay in my room and read up on fashion on the holonet" trend instead of actually attending the classes.
Both of the Derisian Moff's daughters were brought home after Sira Rivval's graduation, which occurred in the midst of high political tension between the Imperial government and the planet's nobles. In an attempt to ease the increasing pressure from the planet's population, the sisters were immediately plunged into the Derisian social whirl in the hopes that one of them might marry one of the leaders of the Imperial opposition, and in so doing take the wind out of the opposition leaders' sails.
Character Notes: Chalice has three siblings - an older brother and sister, Varen and Sira, and an infant brother, Deric. As a child she was closest to Varen, who is away at the Imperial naval academy. Chalice is a short, slender cougar, with seagreen eyes and straight, light brown hair that falls to her partway down her back.
