The Breen
Shrouded in mystery, the Breen have been discovered to be one of the most underestimated races inhabiting the Alpha Quadrant. From what is known, their reputation can be summed up in a Romulan saying: "Never turn your back on a Breen".(1)
History
Society
Males and females are generally considered equals in Breen society. Each gender occupies certain niches, though. Males will often dominate academic and educational training administration, while females are usually the primary authority in local law enforcement. However, neither gender completely dominates these areas.
Breen society places a high empashsis on self-reliance and independence. Breen youth are expected to become financially independent at a very young age. Most Breen will also take a mate and reproduce before they have finished formal academic training; this course of action is widely regarded as admirable by the Breen. In addition, the Breen value cunning, and, while cheating and deception in public events and forums is not officially allowed, it is often admired. In fact, on more than one occasion, athletic competitors have been rewarded for exceptional feats of cunning.
Foreigners are regarded with great suspicion in Breen society, if not outright disdain. Very few foreigners are ever allowed inside Breen borders, and foreigners captured by Breen Strategic Defense Forces are often used as slave labor. However, the Breen have a great intrest in foreign events, and recent theological debates suggest that the Breen may consider seeking out agreements with like-minded (isolationist) foreign entities.
Religions and Traditions
While not as prevalent as in years past, the Breen are still a deeply spiritual race. However, schisms related to the fall of the old Hegemony, and the later collapse and isolation of the Imperium, have contributed to the present existence of no less than 74 religious sects. Despite this apparent discord, the Breen faiths all value mental, physical, and technological development as proof (to them) of Breen superiority. In addition, these and other common doctrines form the basis of Breen law, and major shifts in Breen law are often predated by shifts in the Breen faiths. As a result, the Breen place a high value on the combined opinions of the Breen faiths, represented by the theological branch of the central Breen government.
Because advancement is a universal doctrine of the Breen faiths, they will often support, if not invest, a wide range of athletic competitions, academic training facilities, and research programs. In fact, it is not uncommon for theological hierarchs to have administrative abilities in Breen R&D facilities.
TFC Fur Species
While Breen species are indistiguishable to foreigners, due to the Breen preference to wear refrigeration suits around them, there are at least two distinct species.
- Coyotes consitute roughly 70% of the Breen population, and seem to be favored in military positions.
- Rats constitues approximately 30% of the population, and are the sole species in two Sectors. These Breen are usually favored in R&D and training occupations.
- Other species are present in Breen society, such as tigers, wolves, etc. This is largely due to genetic inheritance from other races that has been carried down from the pre-B/C War era. As a result, none of these species are purebreds, and possesion of a decidedly non-Breen trait is discouraged by the public.[/list]
