Background:

Avran Farlek was born in 2305 as second child of three. His father, Voran Farlek worked as an engineer at one of the Imperial Shipyards. His mother, Avaris Lerak was the senator of Taranis province. His brother, Vorat, followed their mother in political career, but Avran was much more interested in his father's work.

He applied the Taranis College of Technology in 2320. During the regular military training Farlek's behavior tended to be unorthodox and too "flexible". Though his results were quite good, after a while he was put on trial by the department council. The boy was evidently skillful, so he was offered an option to study military engineering at the Romulan Imperial Academy with the condition that if he fails, he will be banned from all educational institutes. Farlek realized that this is an all-or-nothing scenario and he carried out his studies with exceptional diligence. His unusual behavior was an advantage when it came to xenotechnology, he was the best on that subject that year.

After graduating in 2327, the Tal Shiar found interest in the young boy, soon Farlek worked for them as an assistant technology analyst. In three years he was promoted to teamleader, and finally he got his first job "on the field". During the next six years Farlek completed lots of assignments around the borders in the Beta Quadrant, gathering a great amount of experience in alien technology issues. But all these times he never did real espionage jobs.

When the unexpected attack of Pordosians occured in 2335 (unexpected means: not preparad by Tal Shiar), he was assigned with his team to an agency ship, which was to gather information about Pordosian technology from the wreckages and taken-over ships. One time their battle group was ambushed by owerwhelming force, and Farlek's ship has been destroyed. A regular battleship rescued the survivors, but the battle was already lost. Farlek disobeyed his superior's order, and revealed some newly gathered information to the ship's Chief Engineer. They managed to realign the shield systems with haste, and when it seemed to work, the changes were applied to the other ships as well, allowing them to repel the attack.

However, disobeying orders and revealing classified information were still the charge against Farlek, when he got court martialed. He wasn't sentenced to death just because his relatives and that the incident turned out well. He got exiled for twelve years on the distant planet of Parcus III. Nothing is known what he did during this time, because he never wrote any personal logs from that time on.

Policy changed and Commander Torak, who was in charge on that warship Farlek saved, ended up as Proconsul. After the twelve years ended, Torak made much effort to completely rehabilitate Farlek, in fact, Farlek became a hero. That made him some enemies among the Tal Shiar of course. Realizing this, Farlek refused his old position at Tal Shiar and he applied a new assignment at the Star Navy. After the regular military and tactical training he was given command of a smaller reconnaissance ship near the Neutral Zone.

Late in the '40s, after Narendra III and Khitomer, the Klingon-Romulan war started, and Farlek's ship was ordered to the frontline. He took part in numerous combat situations, and he managed to take over two klingon warships, one of them he stole from drydock. He was awarded for these deeds, and once again the Tal Shiar contacted him. His ship was transferred under the direct control of the secret agency. After this he made several sabotage-actions during the war, assisting to them in some cases, but mostly in person.

The war ended in 2355 and Farlek was promoted to Commander of a D'deridex Warbird. He was sent to the other edge of the Star Empire to do reconnaissance-missions. Though he wasn't a member of Tal Shiar any more, he took part in several covered military actions, and made a good job in preparating smaller conquests. When the Star Empire renewed the relationship with the Federation, Farlek was ordered back to the Neutral Zone under the command of Admiral Sela. His Warbird was delivering reinforcements to the Duras family during the Klingon Civil War in 2367, until it was revealed by the Federation tachyon blockade among other romulan ships. He also commanded the Warbird that destroyed the three vulcan ships full of romulan soldiers.

Though he carried out the terrible order, he decided to resign for a more peaceful job. He was transferred to the Naval Technical Research Institute as a starship-engineer. He worked on the new advanced ships of the future for six years, when the Great Rift opened. The Senate thought that the newly constructed Deralax-class Warbird would do a great job as a base-of-operations for extensive information-gathering missions without any further support from the Star Empire.

So the IRW Tirex was assigned to this mission and Commander Avran Farlek is a possible choice for the job. At least at Tal Shiar they think they could cooperate...

Character Notes:

Avran Farlek is an average romulan wolf who keeps his physical in mint condition. His fur is gray, his hair black and tipically romulan. His eyes are yellow. He is a bit introverted and cynical. He has a smooth manner, speaks well but not too much. He shows only a few emotions, mostly negative. He's good at finding creative solutions, he's handy and has very good memory. He's expert on (xeno)technological issues, and he can use them very effectively. He has also shown skill in tactical situations.

Farlek's point of view is critical. He really hates mindless propaganda, even romulan. His superiority comes from his experiences. Somtimes he acts that way even among romulans. He is much more loyal to the Star Empire than to the persons representing it. He never underestimates his enemies, but doesn't consider them any more than problems to solve. He has only a few friends, these relationships come from work mostly. He can open up only in his family, especially to his mother.
