Alpha Quadrant
From TFC Galactopedia
The Alpha Quadrant is the common designation for one-quarter of the Milky Way Galaxy. Prior to 2370, its boundary in the region around the Federation was defined by a meridian passing through the galactic core and the Sol System. Today, the boundaries of the Alpha Quadrant have been shifted counter-clockwise by 45 degrees, such that Sector 001 falls in the exact middle of the quadrant. This change was made as a provision of the Tungra 403 Accords, signed by all the major local powers of the old Alpha and Beta Quadrants, and (most notably) placed the Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire within the new boundaries of the "Alpha Quadrant." This change was made to simplify local politics and record-keeping, as well as address the casual nonclamenture of interstellar trade.
Interstellar politics in the Alpha Quadrant are generally dominated by the United Federation of Planets, along with other regional powers including the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Tholian Assembly, the Cardassian Union, the Tzenkethi Coalition, the Breen Confederacy the Gorn Hegemony and the Ferengi Alliance.
